The concept

A *toile* is the calico prototype every couture garment starts as — made, fitted, marked up and thrown away before a centimetre of the real cloth is cut. The house is named after the part the client never sees, which is the whole argument: The garment is temporary. The block is not. What a made-to-measure house actually produces is a pattern — five or six pieces of card cut to one body, kept in a drawer with your name on it, amended free every eighteen months for as long as they are open. If they close, it is posted to you, and that is written into the commission. It also lets the page be honest about price in a way this trade never is: *"the first commission is expensive and the second one is not."*

Typeface: Italiana — a single-weight high-contrast display face with very fine hairlines and wide, elegant caps. At 282px it is nearly a drawing rather than a typeface, which suits a house whose product is a pattern. Assistant 300/400/600 for body: a plain, quiet sans that lets the piece labels and seam allowances read as annotation.
Cursor — The three body systems: - The three body systems and the seam (above). - Chalk cursor. A slanted 38° stroke that doubles in length on the cloth — a chalk mark being drawn rather than a pointer being moved. - Fibre canvas. Seventeen long curved filaments — quadratic curves with a per-fibre bow and a 1.6 Hz sway — drifting slowly upward in three depth bands. Thread in raking light. The only curved-path field in the library; everything else is dots, streaks, rings, rules or bands.
